Kentucky
recognizes only two political parties. Party status is achieved by receiving at least 20% of the total vote cast at the last preceding election at which presidential electors were voted for. KRS 118.015.
There are no registering requirements for third party groups or independents. You may get on the ballot as a third party candidate by filing the appropriate petition for the office you are seeking by the deadline filing date. At the time you file the petition you designate a title for the party (example: Reform Party) together with any simple figure or device by which your candidate may be designated on the voting machine (example: The Democrats
have a Rooster, the Republicans have a Log Cabin, the Reform Party has an Eagle).
